Overview

About this course

ISO 14067 specifies principles, requirements and guidelines for quantifying and reporting the carbon footprint of a product. It builds directly on the life cycle assessment standards, narrowing them to a single impact category — climate change — and adding the requirements specific to greenhouse gases.

Customers, regulators and tender processes increasingly ask for a product carbon footprint. This course covers what a defensible one requires, how partial footprints are handled, and what may and may not be claimed from the result.

Objectives

  • Understand what ISO 14067 requires and how it relates to ISO 14040, ISO 14044 and ISO 14064
  • Quantify a product carbon footprint using a life cycle approach
  • Handle biogenic carbon, land use change, offsetting and electricity supply correctly
  • Distinguish a full cradle-to-grave footprint from a partial carbon footprint
  • Produce a carbon footprint study report that will survive scrutiny
  • Recognise the claims a footprint does and does not support

Course outline

  • Greenhouse gases, global warming potential and CO2 equivalent
  • Relationship between ISO 14067, ISO 14040/14044 and the GHG Protocol
  • Goal, scope, functional unit and system boundary for a product footprint
  • Data collection, primary versus secondary data and data quality
  • Biogenic carbon, land use and land use change, carbon storage and delayed emissions
  • Electricity: location-based and market-based accounting
  • Partial carbon footprints and cradle-to-gate studies
  • Reporting, verification and communicating results without greenwashing
  • Using the footprint to drive real reduction

Who should attend

  • Sustainability and environmental managers
  • Product and packaging developers
  • Supply chain and procurement professionals
  • Quality and compliance managers
  • Consultants preparing product carbon footprints

Learning outcomes

Participants will be able to scope and quantify a product carbon footprint in line with ISO 14067, judge the credibility of a footprint presented to them, and communicate the result accurately.
