Overview

About this course

This course gives you a solid, practical foundation in land surveying, written to the standard of a professional training manual. You will learn what surveying is and why it underpins every construction project and property transaction, trace the craft from Egyptian rope stretchers to satellite positioning, and get to know the main survey types: boundary, topographic, construction, control, and special purpose surveys. You will then work through the modern surveyor's toolkit, including steel tapes, dumpy and automatic levels, total stations, GNSS/RTK receivers, drones, photogrammetry, and remote sensing, before moving into mapping, GIS and CAD, data management, and the legal and ethical duties of the professional surveyor. Every lesson defines its technical terms, and worked numeric examples, realistic scenarios, and comparison tables appear throughout.

The course is written for complete beginners, construction technicians, engineering students, real estate professionals, and anyone who wants to understand what happens when a survey crew arrives on site. No prior experience or mathematics beyond basic arithmetic is assumed, and the course closes with a guided walkthrough of a small levelling and traverse exercise you can practise yourself, including the calculations used to prove the work closes.

When you finish the lessons you take a 30-question online exam. Pass it and you receive a verifiable digital certificate of completion that you can share with employers or attach to your professional profile.
