Overview

About this course

This course brings structural engineering out of the design office and onto the construction site. Over roughly five hours of guided lessons you will learn what structural engineers actually do on a project, how loads travel through beams, columns, slabs, and connections, and how the analysis and design decisions recorded on the drawings translate into the concrete, steel, and bolts you supervise every day. The course then turns to the site itself: quality assurance and control systems, inspection and test plans, material testing, temporary works and formwork safety, and the systematic investigation of defects and structural failures.

The course is written for site engineers, construction supervisors, quantity surveyors, and engineering students preparing for site roles. No prior design experience is assumed: every technical term is defined when it first appears, and each lesson is grounded in worked numeric examples, realistic site scenarios, and comparison tables drawn from building construction practice. References follow recognised international codes such as the AISC Specification, the Eurocodes, and ACI standards in general terms, so the principles carry across jurisdictions.

On completion you sit an online exam of thirty questions covering all modules, and successful candidates receive a verifiable digital certificate suitable for CVs, professional development records, and employer verification.
