Overview
About this course
A drilling rig has a lot of ways to hurt people, and most of them come from the same few sources: swinging tongs, suspended loads, pinch points, falls from height, high-pressure lines and loss of well control. This induction takes every member of the rig crew through the job the way it actually runs, task by task, setting out the hazards of each step next to the controls that keep people safe. It is not a well control certification or a substitute for site-specific procedures. It is the baseline every crew member needs before they set foot on the rig floor.
The programme follows the drilling sequence from start to finish: rigging up the substructure, rig floor, mast, power and circulating systems; drilling ahead, including tubular handling, mud mixing, make-up and break-out, the tong swing red zone, the mousehole and the crown safety device; tripping out and in, including slips, elevators, the monkey board and racking pipe; casing running, accessories and cementing, including the 602/1502 hammer union hazard; and maintenance of the rig floor, drilling line, wire rope, mud system, electrical systems, engines and derrick. The recurring question is simple: where does the energy come from, and where should your hands, feet and body be when it is released?
The final modules cover well control and general safety: the blowout prevention programme, mud system monitoring and pit-level checks, installing and testing BOPs, accumulators and choke manifolds, the three H₂S hazard levels with their flags, detectors, wind socks and breathing apparatus, and everyday risks such as slips and falls, strains and sprains, and weather and lightning. Assessment is an online 20-question exam at a 70% pass mark, leading to a verifiable SKEDMIA certificate.
