Overview
About this course
A HAZOP is not a meeting you can usefully sit through unprepared. The technique works by putting the same disciplined questions to every part of a plant — what if the flow reverses here, what if this drum runs high — and it only produces findings worth acting on when the people in the room understand what is being asked of them. This free course gives you that understanding before you walk into your first study, or before you sign off the budget for one.
It follows the structure of Skedmia's classroom programme and the framework of IEC 61882:2016. Module 1 defines the technique, places hazard identification inside the risk-management cycle and is frank about when HAZOP is the wrong tool. Module 2 teaches the questioning method: parameters, guidewords, the grid covering flow, pressure, temperature, level and composition, and the four-step line of enquiry from applying a combination to testing the protection. Module 3 sets out what the team member, recorder, leader and commissioning manager each do before, during and after the sessions. Module 4 shows what a usable record line looks like and why an unactioned recommendation leaves you worse off than no study at all. Examples are drawn from GCC refineries, gas plants and tank farms.
It is written for process, operations and maintenance engineers, shift supervisors, HSE advisers, instrument and integrity staff, and the managers who commission studies. No prior HAZOP experience is assumed and every term is defined as it appears.
Assessment is a 30-question online exam with a 70% pass mark; successful learners receive a verifiable Skedmia certificate of completion. This is an introduction, not a qualification to lead or record a study — that is the work of HAZOP Practitioner Training, and learners who finish this course receive 20% off it with the code HAZOP20.
