Overview
About this course
A HAZOP is only as good as the people in the room. This course prepares you to be one of them — as a team member answering the leader's guideword questions, as the recorder who turns discussion into an auditable record, as the leader who prepares, facilitates and closes out the study, or as the manager who commissions it and then has to fund what it finds. It is built from Skedmia's own classroom programme and keeps its numbered method throughout: preparation steps 1.1 to 1.8, session steps 2.1 to 2.5, and completion steps 3.1 to 3.8.
The technical frame is IEC 61882:2016 for the technique itself, with ISO 31000:2018 and IEC 31010:2019 for the surrounding risk-management process — where hazard identification sits, how findings are assessed, and why a missed source of risk defeats everything downstream. The worked examples are process-industry ones familiar across the GCC: a gas transmission line, a selective hydrogenation unit, a hydrotreater feed section, a charge pump and surge drum on atmospheric residue, a stripper safeguarding PFD, and a relief-valve register entry tracked from recommendation to verified control.
It is written for process, operations, maintenance, instrumentation and HSE engineers, plant supervisors and project engineers in gas plants, refineries, petrochemical complexes, desalination and district cooling, and for consultants who lead studies for clients. Four assessed exercises run through the programme: building deviations from parameter–guideword pairs, completing a record sheet for reverse flow and furnace tube rupture, leading a short study on a surge drum node, and answering a memo that demands a five-day HAZOP on out-of-date drawings.
Assessment is a 30-question online exam with a 70% pass mark. Successful learners receive a verifiable Skedmia certificate. Approximately 16 hours of self-paced study.
