Overview

About this course

The Sustainable Development Goals were written for states, yet most of the money, technology and operational capacity needed to reach them sits with organisations. ISO 53002, Guidelines for contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, closes that gap: it gives any organisation — a manufacturer, a professional services firm, a municipality, a hospital, a university — a structured way to identify which goals and targets it genuinely affects, set objectives against them, run the work through the governance and management systems it already has, and report what happened without overstating it.

This foundation course teaches the standard itself. It begins with the origin and scope of ISO 53002 and its relationship to ISO 53001, then works through the 2030 Agenda in enough depth that you can navigate 17 goals, 169 targets and the global indicator framework with confidence. From there it follows the implementation cycle the standard sets out: understanding context and stakeholders, materiality and double materiality, prioritising the goals that matter, setting baselines, objectives and indicators, integrating the contribution into leadership, risk and existing ISO management systems, and monitoring, measuring and reporting. A dedicated module deals with impact measurement — the difference between output, outcome and impact — and with the discipline that separates a defensible SDG claim from cherry-picking and SDG-washing.

It is written for sustainability and ESG managers, strategy, risk and procurement staff, quality, environmental and OHS practitioners asked to extend their systems to the SDGs, and consultants advising on either. No prior knowledge of the SDGs is assumed; familiarity with any ISO management system is helpful but not required. Every lesson carries worked examples from a manufacturer, a service business and a public body, a short scenario from practice, and reflection questions.

Assessment is a 30-question online exam with a 70% pass mark. Successful learners receive a verifiable SKEDMIA certificate. Approximately 10 hours of self-paced study.
