About this course

Every environmental decision a person takes at work, from choosing a discharge point to signing off a land clearance, rests on a small number of physical and biological facts about how the planet operates. Water moves in a cycle with measurable stores and fluxes. Energy arrives from the Sun, is redistributed by the atmosphere and ocean, and leaves as infrared radiation. Carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus circulate through rock, air, water and living tissue. Soil takes centuries to build and minutes to lose. Biodiversity provides services that no engineered substitute can fully replace. Where these fundamentals are understood, environmental management becomes a matter of judgement; where they are not, it becomes a matter of guesswork dressed up in terminology.

This is the introductory course in the environmental programme, and it assumes no scientific background. It builds the foundation in the order the Earth system itself is usually taught: what environmental science is and how it produces reliable knowledge; the four great spheres of atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere and how they interact; the one-way flow of energy and the endless cycling of matter; the climate system and the physical basis of climate change; the water cycle, water resources and water quality; soils and land; and biodiversity and the pressures upon it.

The treatment is quantitative but not mathematical. You will meet real figures from the standard scientific assessments, real named laws and conventions, and short worked calculations of the kind an environmental practitioner does on a notepad: a catchment water balance, a dilution calculation for a discharge, a groundwater travel time, a soil porosity, a diversity index. Where a number is genuinely uncertain, the course says so and shows you the method instead.

What you will learn

  • Explain what environmental science is, how it produces and tests knowledge, and how to reason about a problem using stocks, flows, residence times and feedback
  • Describe the composition and structure of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere, and identify the couplings between them
  • Distinguish the one-way flow of energy through the Earth system from the cycling of matter, and trace the carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles including the human perturbation of each
  • Explain the physical basis of the greenhouse effect, the role of feedbacks, and the lines of evidence and attribution behind observed climate change
  • Apply the catchment water balance and simple mixing calculations, and interpret groundwater behaviour using Darcy's law
  • Assess water resources and scarcity using recognised indicators, and interpret the main water quality parameters and drinking water guideline values
  • Describe soil formation, texture, structure and chemistry, and identify the principal forms of land degradation and the practices that arrest them
  • Measure and interpret biodiversity using richness, diversity and evenness, and explain the drivers of biodiversity loss and the frameworks that address it

Who it is for

The course is written for anyone entering environmental work without a science degree behind them: HSE and sustainability staff moving into environmental duties, site and project personnel who must apply environmental controls, technicians and monitoring staff, procurement and compliance officers, teachers and communicators who need a defensible grounding, and students preparing for further environmental study. It is also useful as a refresher for experienced practitioners whose knowledge has grown by specialism rather than by foundation. No prerequisite is required beyond secondary school science.

How the course works

The programme is delivered entirely online and is self-paced, so you may work through the modules in any pattern that suits you and return to any lesson as often as you need. Each lesson is self-contained and closes with practical guidance drawn from real environmental work. The course concludes with a 30-question final exam with a pass mark of 70 per cent. Successful learners receive a verifiable SKEDMIA certificate. Allow approximately six hours of study in total.
