About this course

Coral reefs cover less than 1 percent of the ocean floor, yet about a quarter of known marine species depend on them at some point in their lives. They provide an estimated US$2.7 trillion a year in goods and services, and they can absorb about 97 percent of incoming wave energy. They are also disappearing: 14 percent of the world’s coral was lost between 2009 and 2018, and the fourth global bleaching event (2023–2025) reached about 84 percent of reef area. This professional certification programme is for people who have to study, monitor, restore, permit or protect reefs. That includes marine scientists and field technicians, EIA consultants and auditors, regulators and MPA managers, restoration practitioners and dive operators, port, energy, tourism and property developers, and educators. Fieldwork is built around safety and research ethics: buddy diving with an emergency action plan, a leave-no-trace approach, permits before fieldwork, and respect for community rights and open data. The programme runs through twelve technical modules, from the polyp to reef policy. It covers what reefs are and the physical limits on where they grow; coral anatomy, the holobiont, the coral–Symbiodiniaceae partnership and calcification; reproduction, larval ecology and the recruitment bottleneck; reef types, zonation, carbonate budgets and structural complexity; functional groups, herbivory and phase shifts; light, temperature, salinity, nutrients and the seawater carbonate system; heat stress, Degree Heating Weeks and the global bleaching record; local stressors, coral disease, crown-of-thorns outbreaks and invasive species; survey design and benthic, fish and new-technology monitoring methods; data analysis and reporting; restoration science; and management, financing and policy. The Arabian Gulf runs throughout as a natural laboratory, where corals survive summer water above 34 °C and salinity above 40 PSU on very thin safety margins. Fifteen hands-on exercises cover methods from the Allen Coral Atlas and settlement tiles to PIT surveys, CoralNet annotation, NOAA Coral Reef Watch data and coral nurseries. Eight applied cases from four ocean regions link the science to real management decisions, and eight field sheets and reference tables are ready for use in the field. Assessment is an online 20-question exam at a 70% pass mark, leading to a verifiable SKEDMIA certificate.
