Healthcare and Biomedical Waste Management Training

Healthcare waste is one of the few workplace hazards that injures the person who generates it, the porter who moves it, the driver who takes it away and the public downstream. WHO guidance is unambiguous about where control is won or lost: at the point of generation, in the three seconds a clinician takes to choose a bin. This course teaches that discipline end to end, from bedside segregation to final treatment, together with the occupational health system that sits behind it.

The programme follows the waste. It opens with the WHO categories and the approximate 85:15 split between general and hazardous waste, then covers colour coding and container standards, sharps safety and needlestick response, PPE and hand hygiene, spill management including cytotoxic and mercury spills, collection rounds, the temporary storage area, licensed transport and the consignment note, and the treatment technologies — autoclave, microwave, chemical disinfection and incineration — with what each is suitable for and the emissions problem incineration creates. Pharmaceutical, controlled-drug, radioactive and wastewater streams are handled separately. The final module builds the management system: the healthcare waste management plan, the waste management officer's role, training records, audits, KPIs and the mapping into ISO 14001:2015 as a significant environmental aspect.

It is written for nurses, housekeeping staff and porters, infection control officers, laboratory and veterinary staff, facility managers and waste contractors in the GCC. Colour conventions and permit regimes differ between countries and between emirates, so the course teaches the principles and the UAE arrangements in general terms, and directs the learner back to their own facility's approved scheme and licence conditions.

Assessment is a 30-question online exam with a 70% pass mark. Successful learners receive a verifiable SKEDMIA certificate. Approximately 13.5 hours of self-paced study.
