Overview

About this course

ISO 50001:2018 differs from other management system standards in one decisive respect: a system that runs correctly is not sufficient. Clause 10.2 requires continual improvement of energy performance itself, and an accredited certification body must see evidence of that improvement. An internal audit that confines itself to document control, training matrices and meeting minutes has missed the point of the standard. This course teaches the technical core an internal auditor needs in order to test the improvement claim against evidence.

The programme covers clauses 4 to 10 from the auditor's chair, with the energy planning clauses taught properly: the energy review at 6.3 and how to judge whether it is current and complete; the criteria behind significant energy uses; energy performance indicators at 6.4; energy baselines at 6.5, including normalisation for cooling degree days, occupancy and production and the three circumstances in which a baseline must be adjusted; and the data collection plan at 6.6, including meter accuracy and calibration. Design, procurement, operational control of SEUs, competence, monitoring, compliance evaluation, management review and corrective action follow, with ISO 50006 and ISO 50015 supplying the method for indicators, baselines and verification.

It is written for energy and facilities engineers, sustainability officers, EnMS coordinators and internal auditors in manufacturing, utilities, buildings and district cooling, and sits directly below Skedmia's ISO 50001 Lead Auditor course. The final module runs the ISO 19011:2018 audit cycle end to end: programme and plan, sampling data, tracing an EnPI back to a meter reading, interviewing the people who operate significant energy uses, and writing nonconformities in problem–location–requirement form.

Assessment is a 30-question online examination with a 70% pass mark. Successful learners receive a verifiable SKEDMIA certificate. Approximately 16 hours of self-paced study.
