Lifting Operation and Rigging Safety Guide
A 28-slide guide to planning a lift, crane stability, sling load calculations and correct rigging, from the pre-lift meeting to the final hand signal.
A training module on mobile crane lifting in two parts: planning the lift and setting up the crane, then choosing and using slings. Each slide takes one idea — a diagram, a formula or a right-and-wrong comparison — and most end with a worked example.
What is inside
Why lifts go wrong — the repeat accident patterns, from power line contact to crane overturning.
Planning — the routine or non-routine decision flow, what the method statement and risk assessment must cover, and the 6S approach to a safe lift.
Load and crane — centre of gravity, what adds to the weight the crane really lifts, working radius against capacity, the tipping point, and the weight of the falls when lowering below the outriggers.
Set-up — the working zone of a truck-mounted crane and sizing outrigger pads and crane mats.
Sling safety — the sling angle factor, tension in each leg, off-centre loads, choosing sling length, choker hitches and a rule of thumb for wire rope sling capacity.
Rigging practice — shackles and slings on the hook, wire rope clips and wedge sockets, and the S-L-I-N-G checks before every lift.
Mobile crane hand signals, a crane size selection guide and a worked lift calculation sheet.
One PDF in widescreen slide format.
Who it is for
Lifting supervisors, riggers and signallers, crane operators, site engineers who prepare lifting plans, and HSE officers who review and monitor lifting operations.
How to use it
Go through the planning slides before you write or review a lifting plan, and work the sling angle examples with a calculator until the factors are familiar. The hand signal, sling check and calculation sheet slides can be printed for the pre-lift meeting.
This is general training material. It does not replace the codes, standards and regulations that apply to your site, a competent person's design, or your own risk assessment. Rules of thumb are for a quick check only: capacities come from the crane's load chart and the manufacturer's rated values, and the lift plan from a competent person.

Questions people ask
Is the Lifting Operation and Rigging Safety Guide really free?
Yes. There is no payment and no trial. Tell us your name, work email and company once, and every document in the Free Zone is yours to download.
What format are the documents in?
This kit has 1 document in PDF format.
Can I use it inside my company?
Yes. The licence covers one organisation with unlimited internal use — print it, share it with colleagues and adapt it. Please do not resell it or republish it as your own.
Does this make us compliant with HSE?
No document can do that on its own. It is a practical working tool to help you prepare, check and improve. Conformity with HSE is decided by an audit of your actual system, and the standard itself remains the authoritative text.
Do you offer training on this topic?
Yes. Skedmia runs online courses with certificates on the standards and topics these kits cover — the matching courses are listed on this page.
